What is the origin of Tic-Tac-Toe?

What is the origin of Tic-Tac-Toe?

What is a tic tac toe?

It is a classic game played by two people who take turns marking on X or an O on a 3×3 grid. The player who succeeds in placing three of their marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row is the winner. The timeless appeal of the game lies in its simplicity and universal charm. It transcends language barriers and requires no complex tools—just a simple grid and basic symbols—making it beloved across generations.

History of the game

The very first traces of the game go back to Egypt, which has remnants of 3×3 game boards on roofing tiles from 1300 BCE. Other variations included the terni lapilli (three pebbles at a time) from the Roman Empire, three men’s morris from various parts of Asia, and Picaria from Native Americans. This was not only a paper and pencil game, but it was also one of the very first video games, specifically developed by British computer scientist Alexandar S. Douglas in 1952.

Ancient Egypt

In Ancient Egypt, a similar game has been discovered, intricately carved into temple roofs. Known as “Seega” during that time, it used pebbles and stones as game pieces, suggesting a spiritual significance. The ancient Egyptians are credited with laying the foundation for the game by inventing this ancestral version.

Roman Empire

The Romans had their own version of the game, known as “Terni Lapilli” Unlike the familiar Xs and Os, they used distinct symbols and etched the game grid onto public monuments. Terni Lapilli was played on a similar three-by-three grid, but instead of being limited to paper, it was played on various surfaces around ancient Rome, from stone to wood. Unlike tic-tac-toe, it used movable pieces, akin to chess. Most historians believe these pieces were likely Xs and Os, placed alternately, but no more than three times each. Interestingly, other games like three men’s morris, played on a simple grid with three pieces in a row to win, and Picaria, may have also influenced the origins of tic-tac-toe.

Ancient India

Ancient India had its own version called “Pada,” where the goal was to create a specific pattern using shells or tiny stones. The game’s presence across diverse ancient societies highlights its fascinating yet simple nature, evolving from carved stones to modern paper.
