About KOH-I-NOOR HARDTMUTH
The company has a rich history that dates back to 1790, when court architect Joseph Hardtmuth founded the company. His legacy was carried forward by his son Carl and grandson Franz, who transformed it into one of the leading companies in the stationery world.
Over the years, the company has introduced several groundbreaking innovations in writing instruments. They pioneered the production of graphite and clay pencil lead as early as 1802 and set the standard for machine-made pencils. Their development of grading graphite pencils from 8B to 10H according to lead hardness became a global benchmark that other manufacturers soon adopted.
One of their notable achievements is the iconic yellow pencil 1500, which earned the prestigious Grand Prix award in Paris in 1900 and went on to become the most famous pencil in the world.
The factory in České Budějovice has been operational since 1848 and continues to handle the largest volume of KOH-I-NOOR HARDTMUTH’s production. The entire company is managed and organized from this South Bohemian city. With additional factories in Městec Králové, Broumov, and Milevsko, most of the production proudly qualifies as Czech-made. The only exception is the division of markers, which are produced in Bulgaria.
